Date Completed: 2-24-95

SUMMARY OF SENATE BILL 79 as introduced 1-17-95:

The bill would amend the Michigan Penal Code to provide that a person who sold a firearm or ammunition to a visibly intoxicated individual would be guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for up to 90 days and/or a fine of up to $100.

Proposed MCL 750.237b                                                                   Legislative Analyst: L. Arasim

FISCAL IMPACT

The bill would have no impact on State government and potentially a minimal impact on local government. The new penalties and fines in the bill could result in increased costs for prosecuting and sanctioning individuals who violated the bill’s provisions. There are no data currently available that would indicate how many times a person sells firearms to visibly intoxicated individuals.
