H.B. 4025: COMMITTEE SUMMARY - PLAIN ENGLISH NOTARY FORMS

House Bill 4025 (as passed by the House)

Sponsor: Representative Nick Ciaramitaro

House Committee: Consumer Protection

Senate Committee: Local, Urban and State Affairs

Date Completed: 10-7-97

CONTENT

The bill would amend Chapter 14 of the Revised Statutes of 1846, which provides for the appointment of notaries public and the establishment of their duties, to permit a notary public to use a "plain English" notary form, as set forth in the bill.

A notary form set forth in the bill would be known as a plain English notary form and could be referred to by that name. The bill specifies that the notary form set forth in the bill that was properly executed would be sufficient to accomplish its stated purpose under State law. The bill would not preclude the use of other notary forms. An affidavit or sworn statement could be substantially in the form provided in the bill.
