        A bill to amend 1996 PA 340, entitled

   "An act to make appropriations for the department of natural
   resources for the fiscal year ending September 30, 1996 and the
   fiscal year ending September 30, 1997; to provide for the expen-
   diture of those appropriations; to create funds and accounts; to
   require reports; to prescribe certain powers and duties of cer-
   tain state agencies and officials; to authorize certain transfers
   by certain state agencies; and to provide for the disposition of
   fees and other income received by the various state agencies,"

   by amending section 901.

               THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:

 1         Sec. 901.  The amount appropriated in section 101 for

 2    federal-rural community fire protection/dry hydrant demonstration

 3    projects shall be awarded as grants to local fire protection

 4    departments.  To be eligible, local fire protection departments

 5    shall be located in governmental units or fire protection dis-

 6    tricts with permanent populations of less than 10,000 and contain

 7     1,000 or more acres of  publicly owned forested land.  Grants
