A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4213 AS INTRODUCED 2-9-99

Under the Michigan Vehicle Code, a driver is required to take whatever precautions are necessary to avoid accident or injury when approaching any crosswalk where a person is using a wheelchair or any device that aids walking. A person who violates this provision is guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable by no more than 90 days imprisonment and/or a fine of up to $100. House Bill 4213 would amend the code to specify that the misdemeanor would be punishable by imprisonment for not more than six months, a fine of not more than $500, or both.
