A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4215 AS INTRODUCED 2-9-99
House Bill 4215 would add a new section to the Michigan Vehicle Code to allow Peace Corps volunteers to apply for special registration plates for their passenger vehicles. The plate for Peace Corps volunteers would be inscribed with the words "Peace Corps." The kinds of passenger vehicles for which special plates would be available include a passenger motor vehicle, pick-up truck, motorcycle, van, motor home, hearse, bus, trailer coach, or trailer, as specified under the "personalized registration plates" provisions of the vehicle code.
The bill would require that application for the special plate be made on a form specified by the secretary of state, accompanied by proof of service in the Peace Corps, and accompanied by a $5 service fee, which would be in addition to the regular registration tax. The special registration plate would be renewable annually on the applicant's birthday for a $5 service fee. Further, using the plate on a vehicle for which it was not issued, or by a person who did not qualify, would be a misdemeanor.
