A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL AS INTRODUCED 2-9-99

Currently, the Michigan Campaign Finance Act requires that candidates filing nomination petitions or filing fees for an office in an election file affidavits containing certain information, including the candidate's name and address; ward and precinct where registered , if qualified to vote at that election; a statement that the candidate is a United States citizen; the number of years the candidate has lived in the state and county; other information that may be required to identify the candidate satisfactorily to the filing officer; and a statement that the candidate acknowledges that making a false statement on the affidavit is perjury punishable by a fine of up to $1,000, imprisonment for up to five years, or both.

The bill would amend the campaign finance act to require that, in addition to the current information required of candidates on their affidavits filed with nomination petitions or filing fees, that the affidavit also contain a statement that the candidate has, as of the date of the affidavit, filed all statements and reports and paid all fines required of the individual under the act.
