A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4289 AS INTRODUCED 2-23-99

Currently, the Social Welfare Act (MCL 400.106) lists persons who may be defined as "medically indigent" for the purpose of receiving medical assistance. The list includes, among other individuals, a person who lives alone, receives Family Independence Assistance, and has liquid or marketable assets of up to $1,500 (or up to $2,000 if a two-person family), excluding the value of the person's home, clothing, household effects, and certain other property. House Bill 4289 would extend this provision of the act to include a senior citizen who met these requirements, and who had liquid or marketable assets of $15,000 or less. Under the bill, a "senior citizen" would mean an individual who was 65 years of age or older.
