A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4833 AS INTRODUCED 6-17-99

The bill would amend the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act (NREPA) to specify that a request for a proposed diversion from the Great Lakes Basin could not be approved by the governor unless first approved by the legislature. Specifically, the governor, if requested to approve a proposed interbasin diversion under the provisions of Section 1109, Title XI of the Water Resources Development Act (Public Law 99-662, 42 USC 1962d-20), would be required to forward a copy of the request, and any supporting documentation, to each legislator. The governor could not approve such a request unless the legislature approved the proposed diversion by concurrent resolution.
