The bills would require health insurance polices and similar certificates and contracts that provide mastectomy or lymph node dissection coverage for the treatment of breast cancer to provide, at a minimum, coverage for 48 hours of inpatient hospital services following a mastectomy and 24 hours of inpatient hospital services following a lymph node dissection.
Insurance companies, health maintenance organizations, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan would be required to provide prominent written notice to customers about the required coverage in the first mailing to the customer after the effective date of the bills or on January 1, 2000, whichever was earliest.

House Bill 5213 would amend the Insurance Code (MCL 500.3406j) to apply to expense-incurred hospital, medical, or surgical policies and certificates of commercial health insurance companies.
