A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5259 AS INTRODUCED 2-3-00

House Bill 5259 would amend the Revised School Code to require the State Board of Education to develop and distribute to each school district or public school academy a model for including instruction designed to reduce discrimination and to promote tolerance among students in the curriculum at all grade levels. Under the bill, the instruction would be required to teach tolerance for differences among students, including but not limited to differences in race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, academic performance, physical appearance, and socioeconomic status. In addition, the bill would require that this instruction focus on preventing emotional, mental, or physical abuse among students, and on promoting nonviolent conflict resolution.
