A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5263 AS INTRODUCED 2-3-00

House Bill 5263 would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code to require drivers license applicants to demonstrate an understanding of the English language. Currently the law specifies that the secretary of state shall not issue a license to a person who is unable to understand highway warning or direction signs in the English language. House Bill 5263 would revise this provision to prohibit the secretary of state from issuing a license to a person who is unable to understand highway warning or directions signs, or who is unable to effectively communicate or understand verbal commands in the English language.
