A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5352 AS INTRODUCED 2-15-00

House Bill 5352 would amend the Revised School Code to require that beginning in the 2000-2001 school year, the board of a school district or local act school district, or the board of directors of a public school academy, ensure that its curriculum for grades K through 12 include a program in character development. The bill further specifies that the program would have to be the same as or similar to the Character Counts program or the Character First! education series; be secular in nature; and, stress character qualities such as attentiveness, patience, and initiative.

House Bill 5352 also requires that not later than July 1, 2000, the state board develop and distribute to each school district, local act school district and public school academy, one or more model programs that could be adopted and implemented by the district.
