A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5566 AS INTRODUCED 4-11-00

The bill would amend the Michigan Penal Code to increase the minimum term of imprisonment for someone who carried or had in his or her possession a firearm when he or she committed or attempted to commit a felony. For a first conviction, the minimum term of imprisonment currently is 2 years; the bill would increase this to 5 years. For a second conviction, the minimum term of imprisonment is 5 years; the bill would increase this to 10 years. And for a third or subsequent conviction, the minimum term of imprisonment is 10 years, which the bill would increase to 15 years.
