A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILLS 5592 AND 5593 AS INTRODUCED 4-13-00

House Bill 5592 would repeal section 4 (MCL 427.4) and House Bill 5593 would repeal section 5 (MCL 427.5) of Public Act 188 of 1913, which regulates hotels, inns, and public lodging. Section 4 requires manila ropes in each bedroom or sleeping apartment on the second floor of every hotel without a fire escape and that is not over two stories high, as well as conspicuously placed notices calling attention to such ropes. Section 5 requires certain sanitary drainage and maintenance, and requires water closets or privies ("properly screened for the separate use of males and females") that must be disinfected ("as often as may be necessary") to keep them in a sanitary condition. (Note: Senate Bills 1088 and 1089 would repeal two other sections of this act as well that regulate towels and sheets, and that create a commission to carry out the act's provisions, respectively.)
