A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5748 AS INTRODUCED 5-9-00

House Bill 5748 would amend the Revised School Code to require that beginning in the 2000-2001 school year, the board of a school district, or the board of directors of a public school academy, included in its curriculum at each grade level, age-appropriate character training focusing on respect, responsibility, honesty, and caring for others. This training would be secular in nature, and would be integrated into the curriculum as a whole rather than presented as a separate class or subject. Further, the bill specifies that to the extent practical, a school district or public school academy would address character training for students in its professional development for staff. Finally, the bill would require the Department of Education to develop and distribute to school districts and public school academies guidelines and resources for the character training required under the bill.
