A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5773 AS INTRODUCED 5-11-00

The bill would amend Public Act 2 of 1867, which describes the powers and duties of sheriffs, to establish a procedure for sheriffs to conduct criminal background checks on applicants for employment, volunteers, and independent contractors for nursing homes, county medical care facilities, and homes for the aged. Upon the request of an applicant, a sheriff would be required to take two sets of the applicant's fingerprints, on forms furnished by the Department of State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. A sheriff could charge a fee for taking and processing fingerprints, but the fee could not exceed the actual costs of the procedure.
