STATE CEMETERIES FOR VETERANS

House Bill 5792

Sponsor: Rep. Paul Tesanovich

Committee: Veterans Affairs

Complete to 8-18-00

A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5792 AS INTRODUCED 5-16-00

The bill would create a new law, the "state veterans cemetery act," to allow the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs to purchase land suitable for not more than two veterans cemeteries, to require the veterans affairs directorate to administer any veterans' cemetery created under the bill, and to require the legislature to appropriate sufficient money to accomplish the purpose of the bill.

In addition to allowing the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs to purchase land suitable for up to two veterans' cemeteries, the bill also would allow the department to accept money or gifts from any source for that purpose. The bill also would require the veterans affairs directorate, in addition to administering any veterans' cemetery created under the bill, to apply for and accept all federal grants available under the national cemetery system and to comply with all federal laws and regulations in administering a veterans' cemetery created under the bill.
