A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5864 AS INTRODUCED 5-31-00

House Bill 5864 would amend the Pupil Transportation Act to revise the school bus stopping location when a school bus is receiving or discharging students.

Currently, if students are required to cross the roadway, the driver of a school bus activates the flashing lights at least 200 feet before the stop, and then stops the bus as far to the right side of the roadway or private road as is possible to provide for the safety of the pupils being boarded or discharged, deactivates the alternately flashing overhead amber lights (if the bus has them), and continues to activate the alternately flashing overhead red lights while receiving and discharging pupils.

House Bill 5864 would retain this provision, but eliminate the requirement that the school bus be stopped as far to the right side of the road as possible. Instead, the bill would require the driver to stop the school bus on the roadway or private road the pupils were required to cross.
