A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5893 AS INTRODUCED 6-20-00

House Bill 5893 would add a new part - Part 6 - to the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act (NREPA) to establish the Department of Environmental Quality's (DEQ) responsibilities. The bill would specify that the DEQ is created as a principal state department with the powers and duties granted and imposed by the act and otherwise provided by law.

Under the bill, the DEQ would be required to conserve and protect the air, water, and other natural resources of the state from pollution, impairment, and destruction for the benefit of current and future generations. The DEQ would also be required to actively seek the participation of the citizens of the state in developing and implementing policies, issuing permits, and protecting the environment and the public trust therein.
