A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4501 AS INTRODUCED 3-20-01

House Bill 4501 would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code to require the Department of Transportation to ensure that adequate staff is maintained within the department so that weighing stations could remain open 24 hours every day of the week.

Currently, a police officer, or an authorized agent of the transportation department or a county road commission, can require a driver to stop and submit a vehicle to weighing when the officer or agent suspects a vehicle and its load exceed the weight limits set in law. The weighing process is accomplished by either portable or stationary scales, and it may require that the vehicle be driven to the nearest weighing station operated by the transportation department. The bill would extend the weigh station hours so that the agent or officer could, at anytime during the week, ascertain whether the load conformed with appropriate weight restrictions.
