TAILLIGHTS ON MOTOR VEHICLES

House Bill 5620

A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5620 AS INTRODUCED 2-12-02

House Bill 5620 would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code to allow another kind of tail-light on a motor vehicle. Currently under the law, a motor vehicle or trailer that is being drawn must be equipped with at least one rear lamp that emits a red light visible from a distance of 500 feet. In addition, a tail lamp must be placed to illuminate the rear registration plate with a white light, so that the plate is clearly legible from a distance of 50 feet. The bill would retain these provisions but specify that the lamp that illuminates the back registration plate could also be a red light augmented by a blue portion of its lens, and that such a lamp would not violate this section of the code.
