House Bill 5677

A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5677 AS INTRODUCED 2-19-02

The bill would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code to allow certain Internal Revenue Service (IRS) employees to use the address of the place of their employment in lieu of their home addresses when filing an application for a certificate of title. Currently, the code requires an application to include, among many things, the vehicle owner's name, the owner's bona fide residence, and either the owner's mailing address (if the owner is an individual), or the owner's business address (if the owner is a firm, association, or corporation).

House Bill 5677 would amend the code to also allow the owner of a vehicle to use the address of the McNamara Federal Building in the City of Detroit in lieu of the residential address if he or she were a special agent of the IRS assigned by his or her employer to investigate drug traffickers' income.

(Note: Public Act 118 of 1999 added a definition of "residence address" to the code that means "the settled or permanent home or domicile at which a person resides as defined in Section 11 of the Michigan Election Law, MCL 168.11.)
