House Bill 6425
Sponsor: Rep. Derrick Hale
Committee: Education
Complete to 9-25-02
A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 6425 AS INTRODUCED 9-24-02
House Bill 6425 would amend the Revised School Code to commemorate June 19th (or another June date) as "Juneteenth," and require public schools to observe that day with an appropriate commemorative exercise to acknowledge June 19, 1865 as the date that the news of abolition of slavery reached the slaves in the western states.
In addition, the bill would require the state board of education to ensure that the history component of the state's recommended model core academic curriculum include study of the "Juneteenth" observance.
