A SUMMARY OF HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION Z AS DISCHARGED FROM THE COMMITTEE ON HOUSE REDISTRICTING AND ELECTIONS 11-7-02

House Joint Resolution Z would amend Article II, Section 5 of the State Constitution to remove the requirement that county and township elections be held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in each even-numbered year or on such other date as members of the Congress of the United States are regularly elected. The resolution would also add language specifying that except for special elections to fill vacancies or as otherwise provided in the constitution, elections for other than national or state offices would be held as provided by law (that is, according to state election laws).

The amendment would be submitted to state voters at the next general election.

[This resolution is part of an alternative version of a package of bills proposing a revision and consolidation of election dates. See the Background Information section of the House Legislative Analysis Section's analysis of Senate Bill 438, etc. dated 11-12-02.]
