SENATE BILL No. 92

A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled

"The revised school code,"

by amending section 1151 (MCL 380.1151); and to repeal acts and

parts of acts.

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:

1 Sec. 1151. (1) English shall be the basic language of

2 instruction in the public and nonpublic schools of this state and

3 in state institutions. A PUBLIC SCHOOL SHALL NOT PROVIDE ANY

4 KIND OF BILINGUAL INSTRUCTION.

5 (2) Subsection (1) shall not be construed as applying to

6 DOES NOT APPLY TO EITHER OF THE FOLLOWING:

7 (a) Religious instruction in a nonpublic school given in a

8 foreign language in addition to the regular course of study.

1 (b) A course of instruction in a foreign language in which

2 the pupil acquires sufficient proficiency to be conversant in the

3 foreign language.

4 (c) Bilingual instruction, as defined in section 1152,

5 which will assist children of limited English-speaking ability to

6 achieve reasonable efficiency in the English language.

7 Enacting section 1. Sections 1152, 1153, 1155, and 1157 of

8 the revised school code, 1976 PA 451, MCL 380.1152, 380.1153,

9 380.1155, and 380.1157, are repealed.
