SUBSTITUTE FOR

SENATE BILL NO. 294

                                                                             A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled                                             

"The revised school code,"                                                  

by amending section 1303 (MCL 380.1303), as amended by 1995                 

PA 289.                                                                     

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:

1       Sec. 1303.  (1)  The Until the end of the 2003-2004 school                 

2   year, the board of a school district shall not permit any pupil             

3   to carry a pocket pager, electronic communication device, or                

4   other personal communication device in school except for health             

5   or other unusual reasons approved by the board.  , and A board

6   may develop penalties that it considers appropriate for a pupil             

7   who violates this prohibition.                                              

8   (2) Beginning with the 2004-2005 school year, the board of a                

9   school district may adopt and implement its own local policy                

10  concerning whether or not a pupil may carry a pocket pager,                 

1   electronic communication device, or other personal communication            

2   device in school.
