A bill to amend 1968 PA 15, entitled
"Correctional industries act,"
by amending section 7 (MCL 800.327), as amended by 1996 PA 537.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
1 Sec. 7. The department of corrections shall provide as
2 fully as practicable for the employment of inmates in tasks
3 consistent with the penal and rehabilitative purposes of their
4 imprisonment and with the public economy. The types of
5 employment shall be as follows:
6 (a) Routine maintenance and operation of correctional
7 institutions.
8 (b) Educational and rehabilitation activities, whether formal
9 or through productive or socialized activities, determined on the
10 basis of individual needs and educability.
11 (c) Productive or maintenance labor on or in connection with
1 the institution farms, or other land rented or leased by the
2 department of corrections, factories, shops, or other available
3 facilities for the production and distribution of correctional
4 industries products and services. In addition to any other type
5 of employment provided under this subdivision, inmates shall be
6 employed in the production of caskets for the burial of deceased
7 indigent persons whose burial is the responsibility of this
8 state. The burial caskets shall be provided to the family
9 independence agency or to any other state department or agency
10 that is responsible for the burial of deceased indigent persons.
11 (d) Labor assignments on state public works, ways, or
12 properties when and as requisitioned by the governor or on
13 county, township, or district roads when requested by the county
14 board of commissioners
pursuant to section 1 of Act No. 181 of
15 the Public Acts of
1911, being section 800.101 of the Michigan
16 Compiled Laws 1911 PA 181, MCL 800.101.
17 (e) Labor assignments in private manufacturing or service
18 enterprises established under section 7a.
