A bill to establish a roadside heritage initiative; and to
prescribe certain duties of certain state agencies.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
1 Sec. 1. This act shall be known and may be cited as the
2 "roadside heritage act".
3 Sec. 2. The state transportation department shall establish
4 a roadside heritage initiative. The purpose of the roadside
5 heritage initiative is to make travelers aware of the state
6 scenic and natural resources heritage in the area in which a
7 roadside rest area is located.
8 Sec. 3. The state transportation department shall select
9 certain highway rest areas with natural heritage themes and shall
10 post signs in the designated rest area describing the local
11 themes and disseminate educational materials associated with the
12 local themes in the designated rest areas.
1 Sec. 4. To facilitate the undertaking of the roadside
2 heritage initiative, the state transportation department is
3 directed to enter into a cooperative agreement with the state
4 department of natural resources and any other agency that the
5 state transportation department considers appropriate for
6 technical support to establish and undertake the initiative.
7 Sec. 5. The state transportation department shall submit a
8 report on the status and effectiveness of the roadside heritage
9 initiative to the chair and vice chair of the senate and house
10 transportation committees and to the full senate and house no
11 later than 5 years after the effective date of this act.
