A bill to create an identity theft victims database; and to
prescribe certain powers and duties of the department of state
police.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
1 Sec. 1. (1) The department of state police shall establish
2 and maintain a database of each individual who has been the
3 victim of identity theft.
4 (2) Each of the following may access the database described
5 in subsection (1):
6 (a) A law enforcement agency.
7 (b) A victim of identity theft, or his or her authorized
8 representative, to establish that he or she is a victim of
9 identity theft.
10 (3) The department of state police shall establish and
11 maintain a toll-free number to provide access to the database
1 described in subsection (1) for victims of identity theft.
2 (4) A victim of identity theft shall submit to the department
3 of state police a copy of any police report, a full set of
4 fingerprints, and any other relevant information required by the
5 department of state police for inclusion in the database
6 described in subsection (1). The department of state police
7 shall verify the identity of the victim by examining a driver
8 license or other identification issued by the secretary of
9 state.
10 Enacting section 1. This act does not take effect unless
11 Senate Bill No. 792
12 of the 92nd Legislature is enacted into law.
