A bill to amend 1974 PA 258, entitled
"Mental health code,"
(MCL 330.1001 to 330.2106) by adding section 901a.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
Sec. 901a. (1) A mental health professional shall not engage
in sexual orientation change efforts with a minor.
(2) As used in this section, "sexual orientation change
efforts" means any practice by a mental health professional that
seeks to change an individual's sexual orientation, including, but
not limited to, efforts to change behavior, gender identity, or
gender expression or to reduce or eliminate sexual or romantic
attractions or feelings toward an individual of the same gender.
Sexual orientation change efforts do not include counseling for an
individual seeking to transition from 1 gender to another,
counseling that provides acceptance, support, or understanding of
an individual or facilitates an individual's coping, social
support, or identity exploration and development, including sexual
orientation-neutral intervention to prevent or address unlawful
conduct or unsafe sexual practices, or counseling that does not
seek to change sexual orientation.
