The bill would amend the Single State Construction Code Act to require an employee of the Bureau of Fire Services serving as a member of the State Construction Code Commission to be certified as a fire protection specialist.

The Act provides for the creation of the State Construction Code Commission, and requires it to consist of the following:

--    The State Fire Marshal or an employee of the Bureau of Fire Services, designated by the State Fire Marshal.

--    A designee of the chairpersons of the Barrier Free Design Board, the Electrical Administrative Board, the State Plumbing Board, and the Board of Mechanical Rules, who must be permanent members.

--    Twelve residents of the State appointed by the Governor with the advice and consent of the Senate.

Appointed members of the Commission must include one individual from each of the fields of industrial management, architecture, professional engineering, building contracting, organized labor, and premanufactured building; three members representing municipal building inspection; two people from the general public; and a licensed residential builder.

Under the bill, an employee of the Bureau of Fire Services designated by the State Fire Marshal would have to be certified as a fire protection specialist by the National Fire Protection Association.

The bill would take effect 90 days after it was enacted.
