Senate Bill 964 (as introduced 3-15-22)

Sponsor:  Senator Tom Barrett

Committee: Transportation and Infrastructure

CONTENT

The bill would amend the Michigan Memorial Highway Act to specify that a highway could be designated as a memorial highway only for an individual who died in the line of duty or demonstrated acts of great heroism or valor.

Specifically, beginning on the bill's effective date, a highway could be designated as a memorial highway only for an individual who did either of the following:

--    Died in the line of duty, either in service of the State or a local community or while serving the United States Armed Forces.

--    Demonstrated acts of great heroism or valor that disregarded his or her own safety to protect the lives of others.

FISCAL IMPACT

The bill would have no fiscal impact on State government. Regardless of the criteria for the naming of State highways, the Act requires the costs for the erection and maintenance of markers on those highways to be paid for by private contributions. The bill would have no fiscal impact on local units of government, as the State has no jurisdiction over local roadways.
