ELECTION PHOTO ID REQ.; MODIFY S.B. 373 (S-1):
REVISED SUMMARY OF BILL
REPORTED FROM COMMITTEE
Senate Bill 373 (Substitute S-1 as reported)
Sponsor: Senator Stephanie Chang
Committee: Elections and Ethics
CONTENT
The bill would amend the Michigan Election Law to allow a current photo identification card issued by a local government to be used for election purposes by including it in the definition of "identification for election purposes" and to define "educational institution".
BRIEF RATIONALE
Currently, an individual may use a driver License, a State government or personal identification card, a United States passport, a military photo identification card, a current tribal identification card, or a specific form of identification issued by an educational institution for voting purposes; however, some people claim that these forms of photo identification may be inaccessible to some voters. For example, a student attending a technical or vocational school could not use an identification card issued by that school for voting purposes under the current definition. Accordingly, it has been suggested that the list of accepted identification for election purposes be expanded.
