Lance Corporal Michael W. Hanks demonstrated bravery during Operation Iraqi Freedom II while serving as a Fire Team Leader. Among other feats of bravery in his service, during the Second Battle of Fallujah, Lance Corporal Hanks rescued and carried an injured Marine to safety, saving that Marine's life. On November 17, 2004, Lance Corporal Hanks charged into a heavily-fortified enemy position and was mortally wounded in the ensuing firefight.
